Atheism for Lent 2023
An opportunity to wonder, doubt, and believe new things
Do you have questions about existence, consciousness, theology, philosophy, atheism, virtue, your mind, your soul (if such a thing exists?), love, hope, or faith? Do you want a space where you can honor your curiosity by being introduced to some of the most unique and most creative thinkers in history? Is something urging you to move beyond your current ways of being, thinking, and acting?
Last year, I led a few small groups through Atheism for Lent, as curated and guided by philosopher and theologian, Peter Rollins. You can read more about and listen to Rollins’ explanation of the experience here. It is an intellectually and emotionally challenging experience of the instability of the concept of God. It has proven helpful and liberating for many, myself included. Rollins has been doing this for years, but has revamped the course for 2023. So the course material will be new to all, even those that have participated in Atheism for Lent in the past. The course does not prescribe an outcome. It prescribes an experience of some of the best analysis and some of the most insightful questions about the concept of God. That’s it. Here are the logistics.
Daily (except Sunday) reflections of 20-30 min; Sunday explanation video from Peter Rollins; Weekly meeting on Zoom (1 hr) with a small group, led by Josh
It begins on Feb 22 and ends on April 6. You are asked to participate as much as you are able, with an expectation that you will be an active member of your small group.
The small groups and their meeting times will be worked out by me, with the goal of accommodating all who want to participate. The groups will meet over Zoom.
Email Josh by Feb 20 to sign up for this experience: joshuamvis@gmail.com
