Still Processing this Thursday, with social psychologist Dr. David Myers!
7pm, Sept 7, Brew Merchant
We have a wonderful guest this Thursday, Sept 7. Dr. David Myers is a world-renowned social psychologist. His most recent work, “How Do We Know Ourselves?”, explores a wide variety of curiosities of the human mind. There is so much rich material in this book; I’m having a difficult time picking what to focus on! Here are two topics that I definitely will explore with David: confirmation bias and micro-friendships. Humans favor information that confirms our beliefs and values. It has never been so difficult to change people’s minds, even when the evidence is overwhelming. Micro-friendship is a term for all of the small interactions we have with others throughout our daily lives. They can be more significant and beneficial than we may realize.
Typically, I post updates on Substack more regularly between gatherings. I just didn’t have the emotional energy to do so over the last month. As some of you may know, our family dog, Jim, died tragically and suddenly less than a week after our last gathering. It was such a blow to us. We loved him dearly. And he loved us dearly. One minute he was with us; the next he was gone. Our lives are so precious, and yet so fragile. Sometimes it’s too much to bear.
We have so many people who love us and who showed up for us. It was beautiful and terrible all at the same time. I don’t understand, and I don’t think I ever will. I did learn one thing, though: In the midst of overwhelming pain, the care of others is the only thing that matters.
I know many of you have gone through similar or worse pain. I am so sorry. I hope you didn’t have to do so alone. No one should suffer alone. If you are hurting now, I hope you’ll come this Thursday. Still Processing desires to be a place of authenticity and vulnerability.
The video of the our August gathering is on the website. Click here to check it out.
I look forward to seeing you this Thursday!
