Still Processing, with Dr. Emily Helder, next week Thursday, June 6!
Brew Merchant, Holland, MI, 7pm
I just finished reading “You Should Be Grateful”: Stories of Race, Identity, and Transracial Adoption, by Angela Tucker. I was blown away. It was recommended to me by Dr. Emily Helder, our guest at Still Processing next week. Emily is a clinical neuropsychologist and a professor of psychology at Hope College. I had recently read one of Emily’s publications on adult adoptees and their relationship to the Christian rhetoric of their adoptive family. It was eye-opening, and reminded me of so many other things I had heard or read about the complexity of life and relationships and parenting and love.
Before digging into Emily’s paper and Angela Tucker’s book, I was worried that a focus on adoption was too narrow. I assure you that I was wrong. First off, the number of people who are estimated to have some connection to adoption is around 60%. Secondly, the wisdom that Dr. Helder and Angela Tucker (and others) are pulling from their work on and experience with adoption is so valuable (and complex and painful and beautiful).
So please join us for a rich conversation on next week Thursday, June 6, 7pm at the Brew Merchant, in Holland, MI.
